Growing wishes

Growing wishes

She rollerbladed across the night sky, weaving between nearby planets and stars.

Her speed left a glowing trail behind her, and as she moved, she collected wishes thrown up from the Earth.

She watched them rise, slowing as they reached space. Without stopping, she caught them mid-flight and stuffed them into her backpack.

At the end of her route, she emptied the pack onto a desk, where the wishes would be sorted and distributed.

Meteor-shower nights were the busiest of the year. Everyone was working, and wishes arrived by the dozen.

Inside the office, each wish was examined carefully by an expert using a magnifying eyepiece.

Within the bright crystal ball, a sequence of images played.

With a small hammer, the expert cracked it open, letting its contents pour into a cup. The liquid was then frozen and planted.

After time spent bathing in starlight, the wish began to grow from the soil.

Every star nurtured a specific kind of wish—each light suited to help certain dreams take root.
