Echoes in the water
She sat pensively on the dock, imagining herself walking across the water.
In her mind, she could hear a song forming. She saw herself walking and dancing over the surface without making a ripple.
The song took shape in her head—its instruments and harmonies, the high notes and the silences between them.
As the music played inside her, she moved closer to the edge of the dock. Not caring if her white skirt got wet, she stepped onto the water.
At once, the music in her head began to play from somewhere beneath the lake. She followed the shapes and movements she had imagined, and each motion brought a sound into being.
When the song was finished, she stood in the middle of the lake, unsure if the next step would force her to swim. Calmly, she waited, uncertain.
With the song complete, she stopped caring and stepped forward with confidence.
She was underwater in an instant. The notes still echoed around her, and she surfaced for a breath before diving back down, enjoying the music as she swam toward shore.
